What is Athena?

Athena is a women's running group in St Albans! In partnership with St Albans Half Marathon the Athena Project has been designed to provide a community where ladies can feel comfortable to meet up and motivate one another to take small steps together towards their running goals!

Athena groups cater for women of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a complete beginner who needs help getting started or a regular runner who is struggling to increase their distance, we have a group for you!

How does Athena work?

Athena has three aspects which you can read more about below;

The Beginners Groups

Athena Development Programme

Social Membership 

Beginners 0-5K Groups

These groups are designed for ladies who have little or no experience running and want a regular group of ladies they can meet with to learn to run 5K comfortably. The groups have a set start date and run for 8 weeks. They are instructed by a qualified UKA Run Leader and we are known for having a really friendly and sociable environment as we want you to enjoy the experience of learning to run. We also celebrate each run with a bag of jelly babies – it’s become an Athena tradition!

All groups meet at Abbey View Track Building and we provide somewhere safe to lock away any valuables. Groups are charged at a one off registration fee of £37 plus small booking fee.

Please note: The groups do require 2 x homework runs a week in order to reach our goal as a group. These will be emailed to you weekly.

All ladies on beginners groups are welcome to also attend our Athena Social Run Nights which are held every Monday and Wednesday – 7pm meet for 7.15pm run. This is great for meeting up with the other ladies to do one of your homework runs.

If you follow the 8 week programme you will then be ready to join our Athena Development Programme or Social Membership if you wish. See more details below.


Athena Development Programme

The development programme is run in partnership with Athlete in Mind to provide further guidance and support to all the ladies who are no longer a beginner but now have new running goals or want to continue to use running to keep fit and healthy.

This new scheme also allows the ladies to continue to run with their new found running friends even if their continued running goals are different.

Coached ADP Sessions –

Monday - 7.15pm meet for 7.30pm run start

Wednesday - 7pm meet for 7.15pm run start

Fridays (daytime) - Starting April 2017

Please note - These sessions will be identical so your training plan will only include one per week depending on which one work best for you. However, if for example you can't make the Monday one week, you will be welcome to go along to the Wednesday session so you don't miss out! 

How does it work?

Andy from Athlete in Mind will be your coach. Upon signing up you will be sent confirmation and asked to complete a lifestyle and goal planning questionnaire. This will help us establish your running goals and motivations. Andy will then write you a bespoke training plan to meet your running goals.

You can come along to a coached and a social group each week and enjoy running with the other Athena ladies. 

What do the coached sessions involve?

There will be a weekly coached session with Andy, so you can enjoy running with your friends. These sessions will vary from general runs, to sprints, hill training and mobility work but all things that will help improve your running and keep your training varied and interesting!The sessions will fit in with your personal plans Andy has written too!

What if my goals change?

Your goal may simply be to run 5K more comfortably and improve your Parkrun time, or you may want to train for a 10K or half marathon event. The idea is that it is your goal so your programme is designed for you. Andy will review with you monthly via phone/Skype to assess how you are doing and adjust to ensure you are on the path to reaching that goal. However if your goal changes, then Andy will simply start a new training programme for you! 

There will also be unlimited email support from Andy and the Athena team.

What social things do Athena do?

We host social events throughout the year, normally about 4-5. These will be paired up with running related workshops for those on the Athena Athlete level to help provide guidance and advice on areas such as nutrition, strength and conditioning, foam rolling, mental coaching and much more including some special guest speakers. These will be open to Athena Achievers and beginners groups but at an extra on the door charge.

Which level is for me?

Athena Achiever – £30 a month  

This is for ladies who enjoy the social aspects of running and want to be able to continue to run for fitness. It includes; 

  • Goal planning questionnaire and review
  • A bespoke training plan
  • 1 x weekly coached session
  • Unlimited email support
  • 1 x 30min Phone/Skype review a month
  • Social Events 


Athena Athlete – £40 a month

This is for ladies who have a set goal they wish to achieve whether that’s a set distance for an event they want to complete or if they want to improve their distance time. It includes; 

  • Goal planning questionnaire and review
  • Bespoke training plans specific to race/goal
  • 1 x weekly coached session
  • Unlimited email support
  • Fortnightly Phone/Skype review
  • Race preparation session
  • Running related workshops and social evening

How do I join?

If you are interest in becoming an ADP member and would like to come for a free taster session to meet the coach and the Athena ladies please contact Katie at athenarunning@hotmail.com. 

If you like it, then you simply pick the level suitable for your goals and register online for your monthly direct debit. Once this is complete Katie from Athena will contact you with welcome details and your questionnaires. You are welcome to attend the Athena session immediately and once you have returned your questionnaires Andy aims to have your personalised programme ready with 7-14 days.

Athena Achiever


Athena Athlete 


 Once you have registered on our Athena Development Programme you will receive an email from us asking you to complete two questionnaires. These must be returned in order for Andy to begin on your bespoke training programmes. 

Social Membership 

If you are looking for a social group of ladies to meet and run with weekly but don't really have a set goal your aiming for then this is the membership for you! The group will look to run a variety of routes from 3K - 6K. 

Social Membership is £16 a month (only £2 a session) and includes;

- Qualified Run Leader at every session to lead the warm up and take you on varied routes each week.

- Meeting location with free parking and secure place to leave belongings.

Please Note: The social membership does not include a training programme. The Run Leader may change weekly, but they will provide a fun, motivating and social run for you and of course jelly babies will be available when you finish!
